When Rachel was a wee baby and we sang her lullabies to lull her to sleep, I sang the traditional ones, and regular songs: twinkle twinkle little star, Rock-a-bye baby, Alloutte, Frer a Jaque, Que sera sera, and any other pretty slow songs I knew the words to at the time.
Her daddy sang to her to, but her daddy can only sing to the tune of Happy Birthday or, at the very least, that was the only tune he could sing at that time. He made up the words, he didn’t ACTUALLY sing her Happy Birthday every night, but Rachel seemed to like it….so I started adding it into the usual songs I sang and, like her daddy, creating my own words to go with the tune.
I am not a song writer so the words just kind of came together and I soon had a VERY REPETITIVE song to sing to her partly because I thought it would lull her to sleep faster, but mostly because I have no talent for creating lyrics. To this day it is one of the lullabies that she still requests that I sing to her, and tonight was one of those nights. These are the words that I put together to the tune of Happy Birthday. Please don’t make fun of them:
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel breathe a sigh
Baby Rachel go to sleep
Baby Rachel time to dream
Baby Rachel rest your head
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel lullabye
Baby Rachel the sun in down
Baby Rachel the stars are out
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel the moon is up
Baby Rachel it watches us
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel you’re safe and warm
Baby Rachel you’re in my arms
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel I love you so
Baby Rachel I love you most
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel rest your head
Baby Rachel it’s time for bed
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel lullabye
Baby Rachel close your eyes
Baby Rachel breathe a sigh
Baby Rachel go to sleep
Baby Rachel time to dream
